Bailouts for people not corporate profit

responsible-bailouts-petition.jpeg

This is personal. My brother is an oil patch worker and he was recently laid off amid the COVID19 crisis.

Ensuring a just transition to a green economy post-pandemic for him, his crew and all oil and gas workers is a top priority for me. I would never support a party, let alone run to lead one, that doesn’t share this vision.

The oil and gas sector is in negotiations for a mutli-billion-dollar bailout. Together, we must ensure that it's the workers that benefit from this investment, not the corporations or its wealthy executives. And, that government funds do not facilitate any further advancement of the dying fossil fuel industry.

I am calling for responsible COVID19 bailouts, including:

  • As a condition of economic relief, the sector should be required to employ laid-off workers in the clean up of abandoned polluting projects and nature rehabilitation projects
  • Any bailout to non-green industry absolutely require the industry meets strict carbon emission targets consistent with international climate commitments
  • Ensuring that bailouts to not further promote the continuance of the toxic fossil fuel industry

As the next leader of the Green Party, I will work tirelessly to advance this common-sense approach and make sure the government answers to Green demands.
