Climate Statement by Annamie Paul

September 23, 2019

TORONTO - This week, citizens in over 150 countries have joined the historic Global Climate Strike to demand immediate action on the Climate Emergency. I stand firmly with the young people leading this movement, and will be joining them in Toronto this Friday.

I am running a campaign to create a safe, affordable and green city. This election is critical for the future of human survival. Canada needs a climate plan that will ensure that the rise in global average temperature is limited to 1.5 degree Celsius. This is non-negotiable. Yet only the Green Party has a plan to do it.

The Liberal Party under Justin Trudeau and Bill Morneau have not set a target that can tackle the climate emergency. Instead, their target is the same one set by the Harper Conservatives. Even if their plan is fully implemented, we will only be halfway to the reductions UN scientists have said we need, and the Liberals are not even on track to meet that weak target. Given what is at stake, that’s just not good enough.

Mission: Possible, the Green plan for climate action, calls for a 60% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2030, from 2005 levels. We guarantee a just transition that leaves no one behind, with new jobs for Canadian workers in the green economy, working in partnership with Indigenous Peoples.

Today, the United Nations is hosting an Emergency Climate Summit for world leaders. The UN pleaded with leaders to attend in order to pledge increased national greenhouse gas reduction targets. Green Party Leader Elizabeth May even offered to suspend her campaign so that Mr. Trudeau could attend. Instead, Mr Trudeau chose politics as usual and failed to show global leadership on the Climate Emergency. It’s time for new leadership that prioritizes the climate.

As MP I won’t champion wasting billions to buy pipelines like Bill Morneau, but will invest in the local priorities that downtown residents are asking for:

  • Creating transit that is convenient, safe, comfortable and affordable;
  • Supporting the retrofit of homes with tax credits, and grants for low-income earners;
  • Subsidising 50% of the cost for renewable energy projects, and
  • Supporting local groups to cultivate fresh, healthy food in green spaces.

The Green Party’s Mission: Possible is a comprehensive plan that provides a national vision for a sustainable future for our children. It’s a plan that does the job.

We don’t have time to waste. I applaud everyone participating in this week’s Strike, and ask for your support in this election.
